The Navy plans to accelerate the development of its new Multimission Maritime Aircraft (MMA) so that it will be ready by 2012 (or earlier) instead of the planned 2015. The MMA is intended to replace the P-3 Orion and the EP-3 Aries. Boeing is bidding new aircraft using 737 airframes. Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are bidding remanufactured P-3s. Northrop Grumman is bidding its RQ-4A Global Hawk unmanned aircraft which would be teamed with any of several manned aircraft.--Stephen V Cole
