India has signed a deal with France to build six Scorpene-class diesel submarines in Mazagon. This is part of an Indian program to deploy 30 modern diesel submarines (the rest of which will be Russian-built Kilos and Amurs). India had planned to buy German Type-1500s but switched to the French Scorpene. The deal also includes SM39 Exocet missiles for the subs, as well as guidance systems for missiles and ground vehicles and unspecified technological cooperation ventures.--Stephen V Cole
