Polyphem, the Franco-German long-range fiber-optic-guided missile, is due to enter its final 18-month evaluation period next summer. Plans include 14 firings from land and naval platforms, although there will be no launches from aircraft. There may be one test firing in the UAE and one in South Africa to drum up business in those regions. The weapon has a range of 37.5km and, with a skilled operator, has a circular error probable that is smaller than most automobiles. --Stephen V Cole
