  The US says that some 85 percent of Afghanistan is pacified, with most of the remaining unrest found in the southeast. Here, drug gangs and pro-Taliban groups continue to shoot it out with American troops. 

The government continues to make some progress in asserting control over the country and reviving the economy. But endemic corruption and local warlords make for slow progress.
